CURRENTS

Flow is crucial for safe navigation and as a prerequisite for the design of various hydraulic engineering objects. However, it is also responsible for the transport of substances (e.g. salt), changes in the seabed, and its effects on waves. Therefore, it is important to have control over flow conditions within projects.

For accurate predictions of large-scale flows and water levels in oceans, seas, river mouths, harbors, and rivers, we use our in-house developed software, FINEL. FINEL can be applied in 3D and 2D modes. It uses unstructured grids to provide sufficient detail in the area of interest and has short computation times. For this purpose, FINEL has been parallelized for efficient and fast calculations on our internal computer cluster. Additionally, we have extensive experience in using third-party software, such as D-Hydro.

In addition to large-scale flow, Svašek Hydraulics has the expertise to perform detailed CFD simulations. Our go-to model for this is the in-house developed TUDflow3D. What makes TUDflow3D unique is the combination of high-resolution turbulence modeling and sediment transport modules (including bed updates). This allows TUDflow3D to calculate not only complex flows but also the consequences of flow on local sediment balances. Density flows and turbidity currents can also be resolved with TUDflow3D.

Svašek Hydraulics has the knowledge and models to make accurate predictions. We also have access to global and local databases for the accurate determination of local tidal conditions and ocean circulation worldwide. In this way, we can derive accurate flow conditions under daily conditions and more extreme (design) conditions, and optionally provide them to you operationally.
